Is it time to make a commitment?

It’s that time of year again—can you smell the chocolate in the air? February means it’s time for Valentine’s Day and it might be time for you to decide if you are ready for a commitment. A commitment to carpool that is.

Carpooling is a great way to save money, reduce wear and tear on your car, and ease some of the stress that can be associated with driving in winter weather. A survey by Commuter Connections in Washington D.C. indicated that carpoolers express higher levels of satisfaction with their commute than those who drove alone.

Looking for a meaningful relationship, but not a full-time commitment? Burning just one gallon of gas releases 8,887 grams of CO2 into the environment, so carpooling even one or two days a week is good for you and good for the environment.

If you are ready to fall in love with carpooling, here are some tips to get started:

Find a Ride

Check out your local resources to see how you can find a carpool partner. Many companies offer a ridematching service to their employees to help them connect, some even have an Emergency Ride Home Program that can cover you if you need to leave work unexpectedly.

Establish Ground Rules

Establish ground rules for the group. Every good relationship is based on communication. Before you get started, agree on the driving arrangements. Decide if there will be eating, if you will play music and if so what kind, etc.

Set a Schedule

Set the monthly driving schedule in advance so everyone knows what to expect.

Be Punctual

Whether you are a passenger or the driver, no one likes to wait for Last Minute Larry or Laura. Decide in advance how long you will wait for late passengers.

Safety First

Focus on safety. Keep your car clean and well-maintained and drive safely–even more so than you would if you were driving alone. Remember that every carpooler has an employer, a mother, a brother, a partner, fish or dog that wants you to know you are carrying precious cargo.
